Help please I am having surgery the 22 of Oct...

I was ready to have a a lapascope by pass. That was what we decided now he said {my doctor} that I am having a Roux en y gastric Bypass. I am not morbid obese and I was having this more for health related. I am a diabetic and take insilin once at nice 1cc. Methformin in the morning. I don't know anything about this, I look online and it keeps saying used for the morbid obese. I am now 235p pounds. What is this . If anyone knows please help me out. Yhe Doc said it would just be a bigger cut. I will check later have to attend a birthday party of my grand daughter. Oh and I was told I had sleep anapa, and sunday get to get my sleep numbers. So if anyone knows let me know. Thank you all so much. this forum is a life saver for me.

Darkpoeticangel-A laproscopic bypass is the same thing as the Roux-en-y (gastric bypass) so I'm a bit confused in trying to understand your question.
Some of the criteria of being morbidly obese include being more than 100 lbs. over your ideal body weight, or have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 40. So if your height is 5' 4" and if you weigh 235 pounds your BMI is 40.3 and you would be considered morbidly obese. There are also other criteria that can make someone a candidate for this surgery which includes sleep apnea, diabetes, HBP snd a plethera of other health issues.

Trust me when I tell you that your surgeon can not and will not do this surgery if you did not fit the criteria in some way. Not only does your surgeon make the decision of if you fit the requirements, your medical insurance also has to make the same determination. Plus, your primary care doctor has to approve the surgery once all of your test results are completed. You, and only you have the final say on whether to have this surgery. You need to be ready and to fully understand everything so please have your surgeon or another medical professional from your bariatric team explain things to you until you have a complete understanding of why you are a candidate for this surgery and what to expect afterwards.
 
It confuse2d me when he said he would have to make a bigger cut. I am 5' 6. and have sleep anapa just found out . But my health qualifies me for it. I guess I have always heard nim use the term Laposocpic instead of thr term roux enY gastric Bypass& it throgh me a bit. But having it anyway lol us newbees get scared easy
 
Darkpoeticangel-Just to clarify things, these weight loss surgeries sometimes can not be done laproscopically for a variety of reasons and have to be done "open". Open is when a much larger incision is made. It's OK and quite normal to be scared before surgery, I certainly was. but you are still entitled to know exactly how the surgeon is going to do your surgery and you should ask questions until you understand everything you want to know about. I took a long list of questions with me and my surgeon commended me on the questions and said it was the first time a patient ever asked some of the questions that I did.

For me the first week at home was OK. I stayed in the hospital for 4 days and of course the first day was a little rough. My pain was controled with a pain pump, which I controlled, for the first 24 hours but I had horrible gas and gas pressure for the first 3 days. I felt good enough to go home after day 2 but the surgeon said I needed to stay for a couple more days. All in all the first week was OK.
 
Hi DP Angel, most of the time the RnY by pass is done lapriscopicaly but like Pat said sometimes they are done open. With my RnY I had 4 small incisions and on incision that was slightly larger than the others, it still shows a litlle and the other 4 are barely noticable. So have him clarify what he is saying, will you still be having it done lapriscopicaly or will it be an open RnY and how big the scar may be if you are that is one of your major concernes, they do have ointments that can help reduce scaring also. Hi Patintrio, My first week was ok, I had some mild depression with some remorse like "what did I do to myself!" and I was sleepy and took a lot of naps, slowly though I started feeling better and the depression went away when I started losing weigh. I actually felt like I was going to be the only person in the world to have the surgery and it not work and I would just keep gaining weight. It all turned out good though. :cool: Tom
