Honest question… Does or did anyone worry about losing too much weight?

I was told that I should lose most if not all my weight within a year post op and I’ve almost lost 80% of that in just the first 5 months. I no longer have the need for fatty foods or even the sweets I did prior to surgery. I still have them every now and then but I don’t see incorporating them into my daily life cause they just simply aren’t as appealing anymore. How did you or do you plan on stabilizing your weight?

I’m at the “maintenance” phase now that I’ve lost almost 100% of my excess weight. My body has really taken control as far as not losing anymore. It’s settled, and more than just in a plateau type of way. I’ve found myself in a 5 pound buffer and I don’t go out of it even on the days where I eat a little more freely. I’m not even sure how to describe the difference between how I was eating during the loss phase and now other than I eat about 1000-1200 calories a day.

It is extremely rare to lose so much that it becomes unhealthy. Our endpoint is pretty well predetermined by our body's new set point after surgery, so most of what we need to do is make good food choices and we'll lose as much as we are supposed to, and then continue the good food choices will maintain it.

In most cases, it happens quite naturally. There usually isn't a point where you have to suddenly change what you are doing to stop losing.

Oh boy do I hope you are right! Cause this is all still so new to my body & I have no idea how this is all going to end up lol. Hopefully it goes well!

I asked my dietitian that, and the reason why I put quotes around the maintenance phase is because she said there really isn’t one. It’s basically the time after the body has lost the weight. From what I’ve read and been told at my surgery center, the only way to lose too much is intentional. Where people once had an eating disorder that made them too heavy, the opposite can occur. It’s basically about mindfulness and making sure you’re continuing to eat healthy.

I stopped losing around 6 months. If I jad my way I would still drop another 10 pounds but my body isn't having it.
Sounds like you’ve come a long way though so great job :) I’m at a point where if I don’t lose anymore weight I’m 110% happy with that, however I can’t stop myself from losing right now even if I tried. My relationship w/food is extremely different now (I’m sure MANY of you understand this). I used to eat for 100% pleasure & now it’s like only 20% and the other 80 is for strictly fueling what my body needs & that’s become completely normal to me. Plus, it’s hard to find much excitement in something that literally is over just minutes after is starts lol (I’m not a slow eater & 6 bites doesn’t last that long lol).

I was a little worried for a while. My chest was practically concave; you could literally see every rib bone in my upper chest and back; my collarbone and shoulder blades stuck out so far that my family started asking me to go see my doctor about mal-nutrition. Of course, I still had a belly cuz .. why lose there? LOL But right about that time, I stopped losing and my weight seemed to settle about 5lbs higher than my lowest and shifted a bit so I don't look like a skeleton in a tank top.

I do sometimes wonder about my becoming addicted to weight loss. I can do a 24 hour fast quite easily, and I have used that to do intermittent fasting occasionally before WLS. I think fearing obsessing over numbers on the scale made me very uncomfortable when I dropped 10 lbs 2 weeks ago, followed by a 5 lb loss last week. Hopefully whenever I get to my target weight, I will be able to accept my new size.

I think I know what you mean. I felt my pelvic bones when I pulled on my jeans this morning. It was such a strange thing I looked down and could actually see bone definition along my hips/pelvis. That has never happened before! I didn't hate it! I don't have a target weight. My plan is to know when to stop losing when I get there.

I'm sure there are people that have been in that - too much weight lost category. I lost well below what my surgical team said I would. They said I should be between 145-156 - or something in that range. I weigh 118 now. My surgical team said that I could expect my weight-loss to stabilize within 18 months of surgery. I was also told by my surgical team that I should expect to gain between 5-15 pounds once my weight-loss leveled out. I'll be 2 years post-op in Jan 2022. If I do "gain" a pound or 2 - I can literally burp, pee, poop and flush that pound or 2.

My husband swears if he had 2 drumsticks he could play my ribs like a xylophone. He has
freaked himself out a couple of times with my pointy bones. It's new. Something we have to get used to.

I was worried initially. I slammed down 120lbs in just a few months. Then about 3 weeks ago I hovered and slowly lost 5 lbs over 2 weeks and then I caught Covid and lost 20lbs in 3 days due to lack of appetite, sleeping alot and chills etc. I regained my water from that event but I'm hoping to hover around this weight a few more weeks and give my skin a chance to recover. After looking at the bottom of my feet (EwwwE!). I can tell even though I have been taking alot of protein in I have lost alot of muscle mass. So I'll give it a few weeks for the skin to try and bounce back a little and then I'll start strength training again. Until then like an episode of Dr Who!

I lost a lot of weight during covid as well. I tried my best to stay hydrated but still ended up in the ER. Not fun
