Hi there, I just wanted to say Hi and Thank you for having me. I am about halfway through the paperwork, appts etc. Im thinking that my surgery will be in July or August (not soon enough for me unless its tomorrow). Im married with 3 kids. ages 27, 24, and 17! We make our home in Central NY. I am planning on the bypass surgery, however my doctor wants me to be thinking about the option of the sleeve.

I am really looking forward to reading the threads and posts and having others that are in my position to chat with.

Thanks again for having me!

Welcome to the Forum, Dreamz64. It sounds like you have your stuff together. Has your surgeon given you some good reasons not to have RNY and opt for a sleeve instead? If not, you should get what you want. Sometimes a surgeon goes by your health status, age, amount of weight you need to lose and sometimes they are just more in favor of one surgery over another. My surgeon said that RNY is the gold standard and his favorite but in some cases he recommends the sleeve or lapband for one reason or another. He does all three and considers each patient as an individual. MOst of the time you get what you want. In my case I am sure he considered my age and cardiac status but I wanted a lapband anyway. My friends who have had RNY from him have all done great. Good luck as you continue on your journey. I hope you get what you really want.

Hi Dreamz64, Javajoy is right about their possibly being a reason that he is saying consider the sleeve. I originally was going to have the sleeve, but my insurance would not pay for it, too new they said. I was approved for the RNY and I'm very happy with it. First off with RNY there are additional, what I call benefits. There is dumping, which occurs when you eat sugar, making it much easier for me to avoid sweets and the stuff that got me to where I was. I was also told it tended to be faster at losing weight, but all three get to about the same point. I'm in too much of a hurry, so it worked out for me. I would ask the Doc why he is recommending you consider the sleeve, is it because he wants you to know about all the choices, or because he feels there is a medical reason that the sleeve would be better for you? Let us know what you go with.

Thank you so much for the warm welcome! I think my Dr. just wants to make sure that I have exhausted all of my options, but after reading everything I can get my hands on the sleeve is not for me! As far as the band being an option, my Dr and his group are no longer doing them unless it is a "must" based on the patients needs.

Frank, you mentioned dumping and just reading about it is enough to keep me away from all of the no no's for ever and ever. ( I know it may be easier said than done, but still)

My next mission is to find a protein shake that I can gag down. The Body Fortess Whey Vanilla powder is HORRID! I just ordered the Syntrax Nectar Sample Packs, so hopefully one of those 11 will do the job. Im also going to try the muscle milk. Since I havent eaten breakfast or lunch in almost 30 years, they want me to start drinking the protein shakes to get my system on a normal eating schedule.

I look forward to learning from those of you that are a step or 6 ahead of me!
