I am thinking about the the lap-band. my doctor wants me to go on a 2 wk high protein liquid diet. when i started this a year ago i wanted the bypass. but my brother got it and he looked bad. he lost too much weight. i dont want to lose my curves :)

i am on a limited income i can not afford to have excess skin removed. i was then going for the sleeve but chickened out. i dont have any major issues with my health. no diabetes or HBP. Thank God. my weight problem is the cause of my being unable to walk. i have arthritis pain all over. i get out of breath watching someone else vacuum:rolleyes:so u know i cant even do that.

i have lost 60lbs this year mainly cause i went on a high protein diet for 3 months where i ate only meats and SF jello and cut all carbs out.

i dont know what to do.

Hi Gigi, WELCOME to the forum!! Sixty pounds is a great weight loss, Congratulations!

I don't know much about the lap band but I did read recently that the sleeve was actually a safer operation than the lap band so be sure and research this on line. The article said the lap band had many problems with band slippage and other problems.

I also am going to need plastic surgery, I just hope I can get approved.

Keep us posted on how you are doing. GOOD LUCK!!!

I forgot to say, I also had problems walking because of arthritis in my knees, walking has gotten better since I have lost weight. I used a wheel chair when I had to go anymore than a short distance. I plan on getting my knees fixed when I lose more weight.

Hi Gigi50, I got the sleeve because I have arthritis and need to take NSAIDs, you can with the sleeve. I'm very happy with my choice. Good luck with your decision. You should check out Linneys videos too.

Gigi, You can control how much you lose-- don't make a decision against bypass just because your brother lost too much weight. My doctor doesn't even do the lap band anymore. He says there's a 50% failure rate (that's equipment failure). He thought they might even be taking it off the market soon.
I'm happy with my sleeve. It feels natural, like it should have been the stomach I was born with. Good luck!

You will be healthier by doing one of the two procedures: Gastric sleeve or the Gastric bypass.

I chose the bypass since it is the gold standard as of this date. As more history and statistics are gathered the sleeve may also become a gold standard. Either way I see many people having tremendous success in losing weight and more importantly eliminating most if not all medical maladies. You don't realize how much excess weight really affects your overall health.

No diabetes and no high blood pressure is good. I suspect you are still very young; I could be wrong. However, if you don't do something about your weight the medical maladies just seem to keep coming and sooner or later you will have many more issues including both diabetes and blood pressure.

In any event, you have made an excellent start; congratulations. I have people in my local support group who have lost 150 to 200 pounds and they did not require plastic/cosmetic surgery to remove excess skin. This is very dependent on each person. Yes, they have some belly overhang, but not enough to concern them nor is it visible.

The statement about your brother looking bad is one I hear all the time. I suspect he is thin now. Ok, he may have some excess skin. However, I would also hope he is feeling a whole lot better at this point compared to where he was prior to the weight loss. It is really sad how so many people think chubby is healthy and being thin is NOT! Weird if you ask me.

Best wishes on our continued success.

Ralph

u guys, now i want the sleeve. the doctor i'm going to only does the band. i wish i had thought about getting on a forum before.

i started at a clinic that did the rny n the sleeve. i wanted the rny then. i have medicare n they didnt cover the sleeve - well i wasnt approved bcause of the psychological interview. i mean i know i'm a little nuts who isnt now a days.

medicare covers the sleeve now. i dont know if i should contact the 1st clinic and see if they will do it.

Ralph i'm 57 i did become pre-diabetic but once i lost 40 lbs that evened out. hbp no one seems to know how i have avoided that.

Search out all options before making a choice. The dr. I use doesn't do the lap band anymore. He said that after some years people need it replaced or removed. I researched things for years and did the RNY because of the greatest percentage of weight loss and success. I hope you get the answers you are looking for. best wishes and if I didn't say it before welcome to the board

That is a great decision, Gigi. I would call the 1st clinic and see what they say. Good Luck! :)

Also you may want to find a different psychologist for your evaluation. I wouldn't go back to the same one.
