Looking for support

Hello, My name is Angela and I had the Vertical Sleeve 5 days ago and I am struggling with the voice in my head telling me it wants to just taste real food. Its not that Im hungry or that I want to experience how painful it would be to have real food hit my stomach. The liquids hurt enough thank you. Im finding its really difficult to make my kids food and remember not to lick my fingers or take nibbles while cooking for them. Oh and I am gonna have to say I hate protein shots.. They are just awful! Anyways.. I wanted to check out how this online support group works and see if its something that can help me. Hope you all have a nice day and I look forward to any comments :)

Angela you need to make peace with your relationship with food and remember why you did this in the first place. What you are experiencing is called head hunger, and it will sabotage your plans for weight loss if you let it. I found a few books that helped me get a handle on the different types of hunger and emotional eating.
And welcome to the forum! There is a lot of information here if you take the time to look through the current stuff plus the archives.

Hi angela bredeen hi you are still human, the surgery doesn't take away our old habits of using food for comfort, pain and just because we enjoy it. It's a daily issue for me too and i had my surgery done 9-2-12, i know they say to remind ourselves why we had the surgery, yes i agree but the mind still keeps working and every comercial on tv is food. I told my surgeo i didn't realize just how many food commericals there were till i had my surgery. I had the ryn so i don't know too much about the sleeve. How soon are you allowed to try foods other than liquids? I know too by having kids that it's harding preparing food for them and knowing there are so many out bodies won; t allow us to have but trust me it does get better and your food options will massively improve over time. Welcome to this site it's been very helpful to me i joined it last year before i had the surgery and daily i find post and people whom are willing to answer ? For me and just allow me to vent my feelings. Hope to hear from you again.
Take care
donna

Thank you for your input and I do know my love of food is gonna be a big addiction to conquour! I started that fight before the surgery but just to have real food like chicken or a vegtable would be heavenly right now. Im not a big soup person so broth is not something i would normally choose. I know all the struggle will be worth it in the end so Im not making any bad choices.

hi I am curious are you allowed food sooner with the sleeve than with ryn? how long are you on liquids? I know the soups get boring real fast and they don't seem to fill you up. I know the first 5-25 days I wasn't hunger and when I did eat it only took a few bites of yougurt to fill me up. now I feel like there are days I could eat as much as I did before surgery. I wish it truly were a magic cure and that all my desires for food would just vanish. I open the cabinets and ice box several times a day. I don't take something out each time,(thank goodness) i think it's a mind thing, just to see what's there and then I have to remind myself there isn't a whole lot in there that is acceptable and when I truly ask myself(are you really hungry) chances are no just a bad habit I am trying to break. do you have support of friends and family? my family has been supportive. yesterday while in the grocery store we went down the candy aisle(I know a no no) anyway I am a chocoacholic person have always loved chocolate and still do, anyway my niece says to me" remember those smaller jeans you want to wear, you should think of them every time you are tempted to eat candy. well I bought roasted peanuts instead. I told someone that peanut butter has become my subsition for reesces. my niece only wears a size one so she doesn't understand the depth of being overweight she has a high metabolism and can eat no stop and not gain.I don't think I ever wore a zero size unless it was a newborn. been a plus size lady since I was a teen. when I reach my goal i'll still be considered a plus size but a healthy one. are you kids young? mine are son age 30 and twins(identical girls age 19) they were my late life blessings God blessed me with them when I was 37 and they have brought me many years of joy.I just saw where your surgery was only a few days ago. you started your new year out right. I know it's rough right now but I promise the days ahead will improve and you will be allowed to eat real food even chicken again just might me another 6 weeks before the sugeon say's your body is ready to try it. ask the dr nutrionist ? they know all the answers. I still ask answers often.I just made myself my version of a smoothie. took one scoop of protein mix I got a walmart strawberry flavor added it to milk and 4 frozen strawberries and half of a small carton of strawberry cheescake yougurt and 3 packs of stevia diet sugar and put all in blender, it aint bad I usually hate just drinking milk and protein mix but this way it so much better. I am gonna start trying some new receipes to break up the boredom. because I stopped drinking the protein shakes and the pounds stopped comming off so I want to get them back off again. even made myself ride my stationery bike too.it took me many a year to reach my heavy weight so I know it ain't comming off over night, but since 3 years ago when I was at my heaviest I am down 100 pounds and since before surgery I am down 52 had gotten it down to 63 lbs but as I said once I stopped the protein and wasn't exercising pounds crept back on fast so I am starting all over again one pound at a time.

Angela hi I forgot to mention a site that I think you might enjoy , it's called The world according to eggface I beleive she is a chef and she went from a size 24 or 28 down to I think a 6 she has tons of receipes and blogs and she tells you things she uses and alot comes from walmart. she is very down to earth and has pic etc of receipes and of her before and after. hope you find things you like fom this site too. it has helped me. Donna

Angela beautiful name. actually it gets better, I no longer want things that I did. Maybe you might want to go to a support group in your area to help you. The mind often wants stuff and we really don't want it. Old habits take time. Besides that dumping is not a fun thing. So be careful and follow your diet.

Exercise exercise Exercise. Good thing you started again. Many people one I know personally is a teacher, refused to walk or anything. she lost very very slowly. This is work it is not a miracle many people don't get that. I heard she.finally got the notion and began to wealk, she lives in Fla. And is losing at a better rate. I get on my exercise bike tired or not and maybe I don't do as much time but I get my blood flowing. Amen to what you said. Protein I like mine so as long as my blood test is okay Feb I am happy.

@ Donna... Thanks you for all the advice.. I am on the same post op diet as a RnY. I am on clear liqiuds for 2 weeks. I do have alot of very supportive friends and family and my kids are 2 boys ages 5 and 20 and a girl who is 6. I understand the whole checking the fridge many times a day but I am trying to avoid the kitchen as much as possible. Its not that Im hungry but I miss the tastes of food. Im not lacking sweets cause I get popcicles, jello and juice but its the salty, cooked foods I am craving. I know I will make it through this and its mostly in my head but thats why Im on here talking about it. We have a local support meeting once a month and I do plan on going next saturday. I havent been to it in months because its always on a Saturday and I am a cashier at walmart and dont often get saturdays off. But this month I am obviously not working so I will be there. Its pretty nice, they do a clothes swap there too where people bring there old clothes that dont fit anymore and other people can take them. Relieves the stress of constantly needing new sizes while your loosing. I might be needing some new work pants by the time I go back to work at the end of the month. Thanks for the info on the chefs website. I will check it out.

@ Darkpoeticangel... Yes I agree Angela is a good name :) Is it your name too? Like I just said in my last post I do plan on going to my local support group meeting this month wich is next saturday. And I have watched friends and family members lack in succeeding with there bariatric surgeries do to not sticking with there diets and I refuse to have gone through all that I have for nothing. I want to succeed and I want it bad :) Thanks for the advice

For protein, I suggest trying cold Myoplex Lite twice per day. It tastes like chocolate milk and is yummy. I actually look forward to it, like a treat! It will get easier as you progress through the stages. I had my sleeve on 12/26 and am now on regular foods, except for starches, red meats and raw veggies. I seem to tolerate everything but I eat small bites and chew really well. Good luck to you!

Forgot to mention a book that I have really found to be helpful at all stages of the journey..."Weight Loss Surgery Cookbook for Dummies". It is excellent and has so much information and tips plus lots of good recipes.
