My Life with my small zoo

I have a dog named Sammie,who is half basset and half beagle. I really wanted a lap dog. I guess my lap is pretty big, because my husband picked her out at the shelter and now she is 75lbs. So, she doesn't rate as a lap dog. So then, I got 2 lovebirds. They had 4 babies. They fit in my lap, but, doesn't like to stay there. LOL So, a friend had a cat named Bailey who is 14yrs old, they had to get rid of. Their grandson was really allergic to her. She is half Persian and half Maine Cooncat. She will sit beside me....But, Not On My Lap. Go figure!!!! My grand kids live in Indiana, so I can't have them sit on my lap. I think.... I will get a smaller lap with nothing in it. Before my zoo grows any larger.

Wait until you can fit in a chair comfortably, or go to a restaurant and fit in a booth. I walked by a table that at one time we would have to move it in order for me to get in a chair, and I walked in between two tables with ease! It was amazing!

BamaBaby-I love animals and would have a house full of them if I didn't have a physical handicap. At one point in time a friend of mine moved in and brought along 2 cats and a bird. I already had 2 cats, a dog and a couple of birds so it was like a zoo around here for a while. I then added 2 more dogs *LOL* As time passed and my friend moved and some of the pets got old and sick (unfortunatley as pets do too soon) I got down to one dog and a 22 year old cat. They're good company and give me something to do. Once I owned a horse for one summer when I was in highschool. I would like to have another horse but would need to move. Plus, I'm 58 and taking care of a horse properly takes a lot of physical strength and I don't think I will ever recover enough to do that But a girl can dream, right?

Pat there is no reason you can't take care of a horse. Most of your physical issues will abate with the weight loss. Of course I don't know what your physical handicap is, but I suspect that anyone that can put up the fight you are, will find a way to overcome the obstacles to owning a horse. Good luck and never give up on your dreams.

Hi Pat, I think you would be able to take care of a horse in good time but I don't know what the zoning board would say if you put up a stable in the back yard LOL. I think the moving would be the most difficult part. I am dreading that I may have to up and move if I want to continue my career in the fire world, all my family and support network is here so I am really torn on what to do so I will keep praying on it until I get an answer. And who knows you may still get that horse one day. Tom

I have 3 dogs and 4 cats with kittens on the way. My two small dogs are meant to be lap dogs but could careless. My big dog now almost 60 lbs thinks shes the size of the little ones. Which she so is not. But I manage because my lap is pretty big too. My only fear after my surgery is her trying to get on my lap within the first few weeks. My cats on the other hand they only lay on you when they want. I love animals very much and if I could I would definatly get more but my husband says we cant have anymore in our small house with also having 2 toddlers. Their pet lovers too and get along great with all the animals. But I guess you could say I have a small zoo too.

I rescued a beagle who was treated badly by her previous owner. She is scared and shy. I have to do a lot of tugging and coaxing to get her out of her hiding spot to go outside. Then I have to do alot of pulling to get her to stop trying to run away. The guide to bariatric surgery bok I received says no pulling, pushing, lifting anything over 10lbs. I'm at a loss what to do for her for 4-6weeks. Suggestions? I haven't had the surgery yet but Im worried about BB

I would try to kennel train her. She would then learn she can actual depend on you and that you wont hurt her like she used to be. Its not easy always but sometimes is. Give me a old shirt or something that has your scent in the kennel so she really knows your scent and realizes that hey shes here to help me not hurt me. And give treats everytime after she willingly goes out without fighting. Thats the only thing I know to do.

Give me a old shirt or something that has your scent in the kennel so she really knows your scent and realizes that hey shes here to help me not hurt me. And give treats everytime after she willingly goes out without fighting. Thats the only thing I know to do.

She was kept in a kennel outdoors most of her life. She prefers to sleep wit me under the covers. She feels secure there. I won't be able to pick her up to put her on the bed. I thought about kennels but I worry she will feel betrayed. I will reconsider.

Only for her to learn going outside to go potty and not hide. Dont keep her in it very often though. And doggy steps are also an option for her to climb to your bed.

I would only keep her into to teach her to not be scared about going outside to potty. But doggy stairs are also an option to help her get in your bed at night.

Ok. I would definitely have to introduce a kennel slowly. Doggie steps are a great idea if I find one that suits the both of us. They seem to cone in all shapes and sizes lol. I really appreciate your feedback.

Not a problem. Having 3 dogs has taught me alot. Along with growing up training dogs with my dad since I was 7 kinda helps too. I would have way more animals then I already have but I just need a bigger house.
