Need help Post Surgery 1 Year and on a Feeding Tube

My name is Cindy Smith and I had RNY on 03/19/2012 with a starting weight of 258 at 5'4", my current weight is 129. I had to have my gall bladder removed in September 2012 after finding out that I had gallstones. In October 2012 I started vomiting every time I tried to eat, in December 2012 I had a 3rd surgery to have a feeding tube inserted and an EGD to try to identify why I could no longer eat.

I have an outstanding Doctor and he and his partners have racked their brains trying to find out why I can no longer eat. I have met with a GI Specialist and had numerous tests, nothing to be found, no ulcers, no blockage, or scar tissue.

Currently the only foods I can keep down are saltine crackers, cheese snack sticks, and a small serving of mashed potatoes. Every day is different some days I can't even eat soup only the juice. I have had the feeding tube since December 17th, 2012.

I am looking for help, possible answers and direction. My current position is I have until September 2013 to see if this clears up on its own and if not I have to have my RNY surgery reversed. I appreciate this site and I am grateful for any help that any one can provide.

Thank you
Cindy

Cindy,

I unfortunately have no usefull information for you. I have not heard of anyone having such issues. Your body certainly doesn't like the RNY. As hard as it may seem, maybe having the reversal might be the best for your health. You have been through hell.

I wish you all the luck and hope you can resolve this very soon.

Hello, cinnyas and welcome,

You stated that you have fine doctors and they can find nothing wrong. Have you been referred to a mental health professional. If the problem isn't the plumbing it has to be the thinking. I hope I am stating the obvious and this has been done for you already. At the very least you need to eliminate this as a possibility.
The mind and body have to work in unison or nothing works. You do have my sympathies for what you've been going through, so I wish you the very best and good luck.

regards.

Dennis

feeding tube

hi there

yes there is a such thing. I live in texas and I have been monitoring the group. I felt this group wasnt for me because seems like there was no one out there like me. I too have a feeding tube and It will be 2 years in August. it is not mental although I have been to see a doctor to deal with my depression with this whole ordeal. A lot of people in the group do not understand when this is an ongoing problem. please if you would like to talk send me your information. I lost my gall bladder 3 months before my surgery, what they seem to think is that my gall bladder was very usefull in the process of asorboring food,,or a filtering process. some people do not need the gall bladder for this, I too would like to talk to someone who is dealing with this. I know RNY isnt for everyone so I see that now. I now see 5 specialist because my health has become dangerous. I keep pushing forward because one way I have to survive it to show it can be done and hopefully help people like you who is going through this alone. trust me I feel alone and I know you do to. Im pissed off and very depressed but I keep fighting. there has been lots of test on me as well and nothing. I thought I was 1 in a million but I found a great GI and he told me your 1 in every 10,000. since the internet and social medias been around they are finding more patients like us. Im glad I stayed with the group and was monitoring it. please lets not do this alone anymore.

weight before tube 100 after tube 120 dropped 4 lbs last week. cant come off tube until i maintain weight of 120. 5ft tall

Mrank15123 and cinnyas did you have trouble keeping food down from the beginning? Right after surgery? Do you crave certain foods that you won't eat? Have you tried eating this food? I developed a craving for peanuts. I was taught since I was a child how to identify a craving vs a desire and to satisfy the craving and moderately indulge a desire if it persisted. So I eat one oz of peanuts a day. Well by luck, peanuts can help save the gallbladder so says the University of Maryland gallbladder web site and helps on troll hormone fluctuations as well. My surgeon and nut. both know I eat this and say 1oz/day is fine. It helps settle my stomach. Weird I know, but it does. I had the sleeve surgery and acid reflux with vomiting is a common side effect of this surgery, thought to be due to the shape of the pouch.

Gosh I wish and pray that you both come through this well and answers will be found out immediately. You are in my prayers and wishes.

I may possibly be able to help you. I had pancreatitis Nov. 2013. They said it was my gallbladder. I was hospitalized and got feeling better and was sent home. My symptoms were a terrible burning pain in my stomach whenever I ate and throwing up and dry heaves. Sometimes I could eat and everything was normal. Sometimes when I ate I felt nauseous. I had different degrees of pain and sometimes it went away by itself as long as I didn't eat and just drank water. I went to the emergency a month ago and never have I had such burning pain and nausea. They admitted me to the hospital and took out my gallbladder. Three weeks later I had an attack of pancreatitis again. How can this be when my gallbladder was removed. The doctor wanted to test for stomach ulcers. I said that I knew what pancreatitis felt like and I know I had it. He ordered an MRI and I had a large stone in my liver duct. I also had elevated numbers (enzimes?) in my liver. It was 700 and was supposed to be under 100. I had a procedure today to put a catheter in my duct that will drain the bile and eventually they will go back in to remove the stone. The problem is that with my R-N-Y my intestine was moved around and they couldn't reach the bile duct very well. (Today was their 3rd attempt this week to get at the stone) I have been on liquids for weeks because food makes me sick and throwing up. Maybe you have a stone caught inside of you also. Only a MRI can tell for sure. The doctors would have blamed my pain on other things if I hadn't been so insistant that I knew it was the same pain as I had with pancreatitis.

Good Luck..

CHEYENNE,

I hope the doctors were successful and got that darned stone out of you. I also hope that you are right about what is troubling these two ladies and have answered all our prayers. Wouldn't that be awesome? Let us know how you're doing all of you.

Hi Gr8k8!!!

My stone is still in me. They put a drain in to stretch the pathway and to drain my bile, the end of next week I have to go in under general anesthesia and they will put a bigger drain in. After 5 more weeks they will go in with an instrument to pull out the stone and close out the drain. I think I would have rathered that the surgeon cut me open and have gotten rid of that stone right now, but they said I have had too many surgeries in a short period of time. So I have to put up with an uncomfortable plastic tube in my belly for weeks. YUK!!! It hurts and it makes me feel sick to my stomach when I walk around. I'm really tired of all this but its almost over I hope.

just an update, I'm still on a feeding tube my weight is fluxing because they tried to wing me off. Now I'm told I may never come off the tube. To get a reversal you run a 50/50 chance of returning things to normal. the crap I've been through I do not want to be cut on anymore.

The message here is get more education on this. A lot of doctors would like to hide me because I'm the dirty little secret they don't want future clients to know about. Be careful

weight now 116

I'm so very sorry this has happened to you. Can you get a second opinion? I'd certainly look into getting a different doctor. You are in my prayers. Good luck.

Yikes.

So sorry about all the issues you are having.

I have been fortunate; no problems at all; just knowing what foods to avoid and learning to eat slowly.

I have an excellent Doctor; one of the best doctors in the nation. He has also fixed a lot of patients who have come to him with major issues.

Perhaps you could call his office and see what they say. I didn't catch where you live, but a phone call could be worth it.
