Hi, I am trying to figure out how this all works. I feel like I really need to talk to some people who have been and are going through this process. I am scheduled for surgery in the first week of April and I have not yet decided what surgery to get. I am so torn between the sleeve and the bypass. Does anyone have any input, comments or questions?
Thanks

Hi Jackie-o and welcome to the forum. I had the RNY in October and am losing a great deal of weight. I'm very happy with my decision. I originally planned on the sleeve as there was no rearranging of the intestines, but my insurance company would not cover the sleeve, so I went with the RNY. My understanding is that RNY has faster initial weight loss than the sleeve, but they even out over the long haul. Also the recovery and hospital time is a bit longer with the RNY. Hope this helps and for what it's worth, I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Hello Jackie, I am having my surgery on April 8th I am having the bypass, they steered me clear of the band and the gastric sleeve here in Utica nY.. Basically because the doctor explained to me both the band and the sleeve are not as reliable as the bypass procedure.

I think both procedures are safe, and have great benefits. Here are a couple of questions my surgeon asked me when I couldn't decide. Do you have GERD (acid reflux)? If you have moderate to severe reflux then RNY is better, as there is more reflux with the sleeve. Do you take NSAIDs on a regular basis (Ibuprofen, Alleve, etc)? If so, the the sleeve is a better option, because you will not be allowed NSAIDs after RNY. Do you have diabetes? If so, then RNY has long term research regarding its role with diabetes (although I fully expect this will change as the results from ongoing studies with the sleeve are published).
It was very hard for me to decide, but I ended up choosing RNY because my blood sugars were creeping up, along with a very strong family history of diabetes. Whatever you decide, make sure you talk to your surgeon in depth. Good luck!
