Hi, I am new here today. I had a sleeve gastrectomy on 1/27. Everything went really well and as of yesterday I have been switched from a pureed to a soft food diet. I am struggling with two things. One, I feel kind of down and don't really know why. Two, I burp whenever I drink water, Has anyone else struggled with these things?

Hi, I'm jduffy. I haven't had surgery yet. Only mailed my questionnaire in on January 27 or 28 to Georgia. Was told on the 30th that I would be notified within 10 to 14 days.
You will find great support here. Everyone I've met has been really great.
I hope you find the answer to your questions soon.
As to your first question, in MY OPINION, it's because of the surgery and the major changes in your life. But, please know that I am not a therapist. I've had back surgery and a hysterectomy in the past and I remember how I felt really down. Again, please remember that I am not a therapist. All I'm doing is giving my history and my reactions.

Hi Scrapper, WELCOME to the Forum!!!

Depression seems to be a frequent problem, possibly a side factor from the surgery. I myself haven't had it but many people do. I would talk to the doctor about this.

Burping is very common and it happens to most all of us. After surgery the stomach is somewhat swollen and inflamed until it heals, as we swallow, air gets in our system and there is limited room in our new tiny tummies. I think this gets much better as time passes.

Good Luck. :)

Welcome to the forum. You might try experimenting with different liquids and different temperatures. Sometimes hot, cold, or room temperature makes a difference. I also find that water gives me heartburn sometimes, so I usually throw some Crystal Light in my bottle. The depression is also a common side effect. You have hormones in your system that have been disturbed by having most of your stomach removed. It should pass.
Good luck to you, and I hope you stay an active member of the forum!

Burping is a common occurrence for most of us.

Whenever I start to eat or drink, I have to stop after a few bites or sips and burp like a baby. We have a small stomach pouch now; whether it be the gastric bypass or the gastric sleeve. So as we eat gas is pretty much rapidly generated so we have to get it out or else suffer even worse pain.

So, drink then burp burp and burp. Eat, but stop every few bites or so, especially towards the end of your meal, and burp burp burp. It is common. Don't worry about it. Several folks that I have asked that are 1 or more years post op say the burping issue dissipates over time. I think it has to do with our small pouches do grow a little and things get back to normal.

Think of yourself as a newborn baby. They have a little stomach and when they are fed their bottle they have to burp once it awhile or what happens? They start to cry since there is gas trapped inside of them.

Best wishes,

Ralph

Thanks. I actually asked my husband if he could burp me. I now am stopping about halfway through my meals and letting the burps come up so I can finish my meal. It all will juts take getting used to. I went back to work today and am scared to eat with anyone because I burp so much. Thanks for the advice.

You know I go to lunch with my friends. I explain up front that I have to burp as I eat. It is the result of the gastric bypass.

They tell me burp away!!!

Now, that is good friends.

Besides, in certain cultures did you know burping is a sign that you are enjoying the food and it is a compliment to the chef!

There you go.

I do it as discreetly as I can, but burp you must.
