My name is Karen. I've been thinking about WLS for about a year. My insurance company will not pay one nickel but that has not changed my mind. I meet with the surgeon and dietician in 2 weeks. The plan is to have gastrc sleeve surgery in mid-December. I want to have plenty of time to get prepared for work in early January (I'm a accountant and slammed in January). I have been reading the blogs and anything I can get my hands on. I have started a food journal so I can see what I'm eatng (right or wrong) so far. I'm back at the gym to get a head start. Does anyone have any specific books that helped you? I found a "Dummies WLS Cookbook" and think I will order to get even more info. I love the way yall support one another.

Hi, Karen,

Welcome to the Forum, and KUDOS to you for deciding on wls to improve your life, even though your insurance won't pay for it. I'm sorry to hear that. I thought most insurance would pay at least something, though not necessarily for the particular surgery a person wants.

Smart of you to prepare for your busy month. You will likely need all the rest and recuperation you can get before you go back to a stressful work situation.

I'm glad you've found this Forum. It's a great place to give and receive support!

Welcome aboard Karen! Glad you found us. I haven't read any books on WLS surgery, but I did read "The Wheat Belly Book" and it has helped me a lot as far as losing some pre-surgery weight. You sound like you are well on your
way to becoming a happier and healthier you! Keep up the momentum and keep checking in with us.

Hi Karen, welcome to the board and congrats on starting your WLS journey. I don't have any books to recommend, but I do highly recommend research, talk to people who've had the surgery, find a support group in your area if you don't know anyone. I also recommend posting all your questions here, there a plenty of us who've had surgery and you'll get a variety of answers and input. Check out the internet sites. There is plenty of info available. Good luck and keep us up to date.

Karen-Welcome to the forum and congratulations on deciding to have WLS. You will be given written material regarding what you can eat post surgery. In addition to this you can always talk to your bariatric nutritionist to help you with your post surgery eating. He / she may even have some recipies to share with you. At the very least the bariatric nutritionist will be able to give you the names of books to help you out even before surgery.

Make sure to come back to the forum to let us know how you are doing and perhaps to share some recipes with the rest of us :) :) :)

Thanks for the encouragement. I had steriod injections in my back 2 weeks ago. The dr suggested I might want to lose some weight. I told him that I was looking at gastric sleeve. He replied "I had that done in 2008 by the same doctor and I have never regretted it". Talk about an angel placed in my path!

Karen, Welcome to the forum. You have landed in a good place. I recommend "Eat It Up" by Connie Stapleton. Although I had some issues with her whiny voice and cutesy phrasing, if you read with your eyes it should be OK. Several of her phrases just hit home with me, and they still stick in my head.
