tired of being sick

Since I had the bypass, I’ve been hospitalized 4 times. From not keeping anything down to dehydration and potassium loss. I had the surgery to get off the meds I was on; but now I have picked up 5 different meds. I can’t go to a live group because I feel like I am the negative factor on surgery. I don’t want to make others feel like they doubt their surgery but I will say make sure you know what you’re getting into. I researched this surgery and the worst I heard could happen was death, I knew the risk going in but now I wished my life was taken instead of going through this. I have slipped into a depression mode. And the one thing that urks me is my surgeons says welcome to the 10%. I don’t want to be the 10%. I did everything I was supposed to do and now I have to take medicine to eat, I have a home health nurse at the age of 44; I have a picc line to keep hydrated so I can go to work. I can’t help but to be negative. No doctor can tell me why this is happening and how long it’s going to last. I feel I have been neglected by my surgeon. She passes me off to her assistant. Wow. I tried to find someone who has been through or going through this. I am finding some but it only last a few weeks with them. My primary physician has seen it but not as severe. What do you do now? Anyone have any answers? I am ready to try anything. Im not just sitting around feeling sorry for my self , I do go out with a girlfriend to the movies, I do work, I have tried different foods to test my stomach (chicken has only been my success) They had to start me on a full diet after my 2nd hospital stay. Im pushing hard everyday and now I have seeked professional help. still no answers. hopefully the group can help me. I still reading positive things about the surgery. it is a great tool, I didnt sign up for this to look good in a pair of jeans. Im would like to talk to anyone who has had this ordeal or know someone.

thanks

Mrank-Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear you are not feeling as well as you would like to be. I see that you have had to return to the hospital 4 times for various reasons. One reason was for not being able to keep food down. May I ask what was done to resolve this issue. I'm wondering if you had a strictire or stenosis of the opening from your pouch leading into the small intestine that needed repair. Dehydration happens to roughly 10% of us, usually in the early days / weeks after surgery and is "easily" corrected. Potassium loss happens but is not as common as other issues. Is a potassium supplement one of the 5 new meds you have been given? There is another person on this forum who has to take potassium and she says it tastes horrible. I think she said it comes in a liquid form and she adds it to a protein drink to try to disguise the taste. I hve to take 6 additional pills since my surgery but they are vitamins, an antacid (prilosec) and other supplements that I need because of the weight loss, lack of stomach acid and malabsorbtion that always happens after this surgery. I was told before surgery to expect to take these pills for the rest of my life in order to stay healthy so I don't consider this any big deal.

I still have a hard time eating whole meats for protein and have to stick with other things in order to get at least 60 grams a day. There are so many other options out there and you just have to try them until you find thethings that work for you. Before surgery I used to like beef pot roast but if I eat it now I feel like I have golf balls stuck in my pouch. I just recently have been able to eat chicken but it has to be soft, moist dark meat chewed EXTREMELY well or it makes my pouch uncomfortable. There's no race to win when it comes to finding out what will work. We are all different and will get different results.

Just keep coming back to this forum so we can help you through your rough patch. There are many people here that are going through some of the same things you are right now. There are definately things we all have to do to adjust after surgery and sometimes it's just a matter of developing a routine and sticking to it before we become used to the changes. And congratulations on doing so well with your weight loss :) :) :)

Hi Mrank. I can see why you are feeling doubtfull about your surgery, you are one of us who have done everything right and still having complications, this is all the more reason to go to a live support group if you can, you may or may not find someone who is going through what you are chancer are that you will if you go regularly, when things are going good we tend to not think we need the support group and when things are rough going that is when we start to go again, I know I had a rough patch myself but I was able to get through it, so if you can get to a live support group please go, and of course please checking in here because there are folks here that have had a rough time also. Hang in there and do your best to keep on your doctors for help through this. Tom
