Question on "special diet"

I'm 6months out and am going on an all day trip. One of the questions the group asked is do you have a special diet or any dietary restrictions? How should I respond to this? I'm eating most things but stay away from anything with high sugar or flight fat, and. Of course concentrate on protein.

I would say yes you do have some dietary restrictions, compared to what everyone else eats, just give them the lowdown on what you can and cannot eat and maybe the group can get an idea of what you need. or pack a cooler for yourself since you already know what your diet consist of.

I am in the middle of week 3 post surgery and I am worried still about getting enough fluids and protein in a day. I am currently looking for a better way of getting my protein. the liquid protein shots called "New Whey" gag! I was in the hospital a few days more than called for b/c of chronic nausea and the liquid protein I can't do b/c all I want to do it throw it up. I am trying the shakes now but it seems to be getting the same way. Does anyone know of the "tasteless" protein powder you can add to things to get the protein?

6 months out I could eat anything in small amounts. I wouldn't say anything about a special diet but just concentrate eating your meat (protein) and veggies in whatever meal they have to offer. There would be some choices probably because some people love fish some hate fish. Some people love chicken some hate chicken. Some people are vegetarians. So if they don't tell you the exact menu then they probably will have some choices. I'm not sure how your surgeon has told you to eat, but I'm allowed to eat any food I want in very small amounts and it's worked well for me. I don't feel deprived or different. I eat my protein and veggies first and then I may have a bite or two of something thats not as good for me. Everything in small amounts for your tiny tummy. :)

Unjury makes a good unflavored protein powder.

Yes you are on a special diet.... Make sure to notify folks that you need your meat / chicken/ pork / fish protein as well as fruits and veggies are to be season free / or dry just in case they use rubs / seasonings and such that contain any form of processed sugars.

I am quiet sure you do not want to have to deal with dumping or any other issues while on your day trip.

I have been amazed by just how many restaurants use seasonings, sauces, cheese, "butters" and such that have huge amounts of sugars in them. Hidden sugars are a killer.

Worst case pack a nice bariatric friendly meal.

What are these "hidden" sugars I read about? and what foods are they in?

They can be in any food, drink, seasoning, sauces, artificial butters, or other edible item you eat. This is why it is so important to read labels and ask questions when you are at restaurants..

As an example: my husband and I went to the market, I wanted some ready made lemon pepper seasoning, normally I make my using my own fresh dehydrated lemon peel which I was out off. I started reading labels of all the brands on the shelf and ALL of them with the exception of Mrs. Dash's had sugar in them as the 3rd to 5th ingredient.... It may not be much alone but it is enough to add up over the course of a day if you are not watching the hidden sugars you may potentially eat or drink over the day and week.

You do not need to restrict yourself from the foods that you want. Just limit them from indulging too much. Which means to keep the balance of your foods to still get the right amount of nutrients that your body needs!
