I heard that the leak test performed after surgery is the worst part of the procedure. Is this liquid you have to drink as horrible as it sounds?

I did not have to have a leak test. My surgeon does a flush or something once he seals your stoma.

Mine was completed while I was still under anesthesia. My surgeon injects a dye to check for leaks. I specifically asked about it when he came to check on me after surgery.

Mimi I’m not sure when they did mine. I must have been under still. They had me drinking broth and juice/water right after I woke up. I do not think you need to worry about it

Mine was done right after surgery before I was even awake. Even if you have to do the barium swallow test it’s not that bad and you can’t taste it. They put it in broth or juice and that’s all you taste.

I was told by a good friend (who had the same surgeon that I have) that she had to drink a terrible liquid the next day while performing some physical tasks and x rays. We shall see! Thank you all for your support!

My surgeon does the barium drink leak test the day after as well. He's over cautious and has been doing this surgery for several years.

Yes, I confirmed at today's class that I will be doing the barium leak teast and I also was warned that it is disgusting! I go to University Hospital in Cleveland, and it part of everyone's surgery here.

I did the barium swallow and I'm not going to lie...it was gross lol. It's not the taste, because it is tasteless...it's the THICKNESS!! I had to swallow 3 different ones. The 1st part taste like sprite, wasn't bad. The 2nd one was rough...had to swallow it in 3 phases. The 3rd one was more rough because I was lying on my side and had to take big drinks and swallow it...not gonna lie...I almost lost it lol. So if this is what you are doing it is tolerable but it is rough. Best of luck to you and you got this!!

I'm not looking forward to the barium at all. I had my endoscopy at the end of October. They made me drink lidocaine. It was so thick, gross and I almost vomited. I really hope the barium is not that bad.
