Surgery 10/27/14

Hi my name is Phyllis

My surgery date is this monday 10/27/14. I am anxious, but not as bad as I was a week ago. Living on protein shakes.
I have a lot of supporters and of course a few nay sayers. I even had one person plead with me not to do it. I have seen
too many positive results to go back now. This has been a long process since May. I came to the conclusion that this was my
decision and no one elses. Wish me luck and I will post again as soon as I can after surgery.

WELCOME to the forum, Phyllis!!! So glad you have joined us. :)

You have made a great decision. You won't regret it.

Weight loss surgery saved my life. I had all kinds of serious health problems which were made worse by my weight. I am now the healthiest I have been for years. My sleep apnea is gone, I'm off my two blood pressure meds. My breathing and oxygen level are normal now. Even though my blood sugar levels were normal, I was insulin resistant and pre-diabetic according to my blood tests. Now my blood levels are perfect. I had heart failure and now my latest heart tests showed my heart is now functioning within normal range. I am so happy my life has changed. Along with all the health benifits, I sent all my tent sized clothes to GoodWill. I love to shop now. I am really happy!

Yes keep us posted on your surgery. Good luck to you :)

bowel problems after surgery

Don't know if anyone has dealt with this after vsg but I am three weeks out and have been having a lot of bowel problems. It started with constipation, then a bowel impaction. I ended up in the er getting two enemas and Dr trying to manually remove the impaction. It was horrible. They sent me home and an hour later I was back an admitted with a fever of 102. Cat scan was clear. Xray said I was full of fecal matter. The next day they gave me magnesium citrate which was no fun either. I was sent home again. A few days were OK then I was told to stay on stool softeners and began to get bowel spasms and going to the bathroom constantly. I was unable to leave the house and I still haven't. I don't trust my bowels. I think it is getting better. Has anyone had this problem. It has caused me much anxiety

Hi Phyllis! Yes, I had bad constipation after my bariatric surgery for the first 6 months or so. I didn't end up in the ER but I spent a lot of time figuring out stool softners, Metamucil, drinking more liquids, glycerin supositories etc. I had moderate problems after the first 6 months but not quite so severe. The stool softner and glycerin supositories helped me the most because I have been hesitant to use real laxatives because my mom was addicted to them and couldn't go without them. I am about 17 months post surgery and doing much better in this regard now. I figured out if I cook with a lot of onions, it doesn't add many calories but it does help me to go regularly without stress. You are too soon after surgery to be eating onions or something of the like to help you go but you might try increasing your liquids, you might be somewhat dehydrated which can have a direct affect on your bowels.

Good luck,

Cheyenne

I think we all have bowel issues. I am still taking stool softeners (3 of them each day) to keep my movements regular and easy. If I didn't use the stool softeners, I had similar issues as you are describing. However, I didn't let it get to the point that I had to go to the ER.

Be vigilant on this one. I am happy to hear you are doing better. Don't miss the softeners. Keep taking them. You may need them for a pretty long time.

I am past my first anniversary now, but I still need the stool softeners. A lot of it has to do with your diet and how it is changed. I still cannot eat a lot of veggies. I try, but it isn't enough yet.

Take prunes too. I love prunes. But I couldn't tolerate them for the first several months.

Keep your surgeon and his team apprised as I believe you are doing.

It will get better.

Ralph
