To Blend(er) or Not?

I am almost to my 5th week post-op. I have officially lost 31lbs per my doctor's visit on 6/15/12 :D! I am steadily having problems drinking my protein supplements due to uniformity. My doctor doesn't recommend using a blender to add items to supplements until about the 6th month out due to added air it adds. A relative and another acquaintance say the protein is more important to go ahead and use the blender. What does everyone else think? Thank you in advance for your help!!

I don't see why you couldn't use the blender, my surgeon says to have one handy at home. But then again, I haven't had my surgery yet, but when I do I will see what my dr says. Keep us posted!

Hi QueenJ9, Welcome. My doctors never told me not to use a blender, I wouldn't recomend going against a doctors recomendation however getting your protien in is important, sometimes we do what we must do to get our protien in. If you do decide to use a blender let it settle for a couple of minutes to let the air bubbles escape. Have you tried using the shaker bottles made for protien drinks, I use one of those when I am on the road or at work and they work real well at mixing up shakes. Tom

Hi QueenJ9, welcome. I am 1 wk out from my GB surgery, and I was told by my bariatric center to go ahead and use a blender but put the finished product in the refrigerator for one hour to settle the bubbles, which can cause major gas pains. Hope this helps.

Eric :)

Hi, Queen. During my nutrition training while prepping for Lapband placement I asked about using a blender. The nutritionist said no because of the bubbles. Then when I went for my post op appt. I mentioned how tiresome the shakes were getting and the Medical Assistant says "do what I do and mix fruit in with it in the blender like a smoothie". I told her the nutritionist said not to do that and she said that if you let it sit a bit to let the air out of it and then pour it into your glass it works fine. Then I went to a support group meeting and they gave us all sorts of recipes that use a blender. I like banana and strawberry the best. She used frozen strawberries with splenda in them. I use unjury protein and I tend to like the crystal light lemon or orange flavors with strawberry sorbet and they don't need to be blended. The unjury works really well. Good luck. Smetimes in order to get your protein you have to do what you have to do and if you let the air out the blender works.

You can also purchase pre-mixed protein at Walmart. EAS ADVANTEDGE is $4.74 for a 4 pk. Also some bariatric sites sell the individual bottles that you just add water to and shake. New Life has some pretty good flavors.

If you are able to tolerate the blended drinks then go ahead and use the blender. It's more important to get the protein inside of you than anything else.

Thank you for all the help. I've pretty much decided to use the blender and let it sit. And thanks Tom! I do have one of those shaker things with the blender things that will help to add some "tolerable" items to my shakes!

Hi QueenJp, Let me say welcome to this forum. I have found much help here. I also discovered that all doctors differ on what we can or cannot eat. Me, I can only eat pure protein until I lose 75% of my weight. I like the Nectar drinks the best. Fuzzy Navel and Pink Grapefruit are my favorites. They are fruity and refreshing. I use both the blender and the blender bottle. Protein drinks tend to foam so I try to mix mine ahead of time to drink later. It also has time to really get cold then. I do add ice and sip, sip, sip. That was the hardest thing for me to learn and I still don't do it very well. How do you get 64 ounces of liquid if you sip. I would have to stay up half the night sipping. Well, I hope you have found your answers. I think you have. You are doing very well on your WL Journey.
