Today's protein shake

So I made up a protein shake based on one Premier Protein vanilla flavored shake and about a quarter cup of nonfat milk, which I use just to rinse out the Premier Protein container so I get every drop of it. Then I added 1/4 cup PB, and one tsp NF/SF butterscotch pudding. I am drinking it now and it is fantastic.

It's 46 to 48 grams of protein. And 300 calories.

I see you are getting on the protein shake train ;). I remember you posting about the calorie/protein ratio shortly before I took my break. Your recipe above sounds fantastic! Any other additives/combos that you have come across and like?

Oh yeah. For 5 days in a row I made five different protein shakes. The one I had most recently was strawberry cheesecake. I used the vanilla Premier Protein Shake, a little more milk, a bunch of strawberries, some Greek yogurt, some vanilla, and a teaspoon or two of Jell-O instant cheesecake pudding. I blended this all up and it was a liter of food that took me hours to consume and I didn't even count the grams because I knew it was probably close to being 50.

It is absolutely insane that the Fage nonfat Greek yogurt is 18 grams of protein per 3/4 cup. That makes everything so much easier.

I've been adding a few drops of orange extract and vanilla extract to my isolate whey protein powder (30g protein 160 cal) and it reminds me of a dreamsicle...the premier protein ready made shakes were starting to get to be a bit much when I had 3 in a day and it takes me 30 min to drink one but I also found Isopure protein drink in black tea with lemon flavor and I'm so happy to have a different texture than the shake - AND it's 40g of protein, 160 cal and 20oz... Huzzah! I get through it and I'm halfway to my protein total!! (I'm only 7 days out from gastric bypass so not a lot of real food yet)

How does it taste?

I use Aldi's Orange/Tangerine water squirt to make the dreamsicle shake. They are so good. I have also used a scoop of chocolate protein and 1T of PB Fit to make a PB cup shake. (not as good as a Reese's but pretty good). I also use the Coconut Protein 2o water with a scoop of chocolate protein to make MochOnut shakes. I really cannot stand the chocolate premier shakes. I think they're very bland. Aldi's has chocolate protein powder that is more chocolate-y and much less expensive than premade. Add ICE!

Those are great ideas! I have been looking for all kinds of flavorings and ended up in the sno-cone aisle at Target store where I picked up a few that give me a lot of variety if I want to use them. So here's my collection of powders and flavorings. I use sugar-free butterscotch or cheesecake flavored instant pudding a tablespoon at a time to add flavor and thickness. I also use Dutch chocolate with artificial sweetener and of course I put everything in the blender with Magic Milk. And, as you say, ice! That turns it into a milkshake.

I'm drinking a pina colada protein shake right now which I use the sno-cone flavoring to make and then threw in handful of frozen pineapple and blended it till it was thick. I have to say it does not taste very good. I think it's going to take me a couple hours to choke this down. I thought about dumping it out, but what is it, 30 g of protein?

If I have one tomorrow, I think I'm just going to use a little pudding and maybe a little vanilla extract.

LJ, where did you find the orange extract?

They have it at Aldi for their own brand, and Mio brand has the same flavor that you can get at pretty much any grocery store.

Thanks, El. We don't have Aldi in the PNW. Maybe Fred Meyer or QFC has a well-stocked baking section. I think I'll try adding unsweetened frozen juice concentrate sometime. But for now I'm gonna try to drink some straight out of the container, butterscotch or chocolate to make sure I get the protein I need. Like everyone else, I'm a little down and shifting focus would probably make me feel better.

I was just going to comment on your Pina Colada when I saw it in the picture I do the same recipe and it’s really refreshing especially on a hot day
Do you use the sno-cone flavoring? I may have done it wrong or I may just be overly sensitive to artificial flavors. I really still can't figure out what was wrong with yesterday's drink, but it took me all day to finish it. I think a vanilla protein shake with pineapple might be enough. Maybe if I do it again I will also include a spoonful of frozen juice concentrate of some kind, citrus or pineapple.

I want to add these to today's list of protein shake ideas.
