trouble sleeping

surgery is 12 days away and the roller coaster of thoughts and emotions is making it hard to sleep.

I went through that too! I feel for you. I had so much angst before the surgery, I almost think that was the hardest part! It will come soon enough. Best wishes!

Hi Renie, it is normal, just do your best to get rest whenever you can.I don'tthink I slept a wink the night before I went in for surgery, I was so filled with anxiety and the fear that I would over sleep and miss my appointment , I had to be up at 3am to be there at 530am. The anxiety will be over soon, hang in there your doing great. Tom

When they used to admit you to the hospital the night before any surgery (way back when and giving my 69 years of age away) they always gave a sleeping pill the night before surgery. I kind of miss that, I know I did the night before I had my surgery. They always said this was part of anesthesia prescribed by the anesthesiologist. I don't know if patients did better or not but a good night's sleep seems well worth it.

Me too. I just had my operation this past Wednesday. Now that I'm home, I'm making up for it!! Hang in there!

Renie-It's normal to have a hard time sleeping before surgery. nap and rest when you feel the urge and you will do just fine. Don't expect to get much sleep in the hospital either because they will be taking vitals and checking your IV's every little while. Just make your bedroom at home comfortable for yourself so you can get some slepp once you return home. Keeping it dark, quiet and at a comfortable temperature will help promote sleep. So will removing the TV, Computer, radio and any other electronics to avoid distraction. Also, turn your clock's "face" away from you for 2 reasons. You won't be able to stare at it if you don't fall asleep right away and any light coming from it won't keep you awake.

I still am having problems sleeping. Or staying a sleep. Is this just a body readjusting thing? I love all of ya, you guys and gals are so GREAT.

I had the worst time sleeping right after surgery, too. I think it was from all the anesthesia and the morphine drip. I would sleep for no more than 3 hours at a time. Then it got great, now it's off because of my hormones.

I am with you, sleepy anxiety but getting sleep is important so I try to calm myself. It will all be for the best, expect to have problems at first with the changes and then if you do not it will be a good suprise and if you do, it is expected. At least that is how I am doing.
