Two week pre-op liquid diet fail

I am supposed to be drinking 2 protein shakes and one small meal per day to prepare for surgery. This is supposed to shrink the liver. I am absolutely starving on this diet and have not been able to stick to it. PMS hunger is winning and I am worried that I can't do it. My surgery date is November 28th and I don't want to screw up!

It also urks me that protien shakes are used at this time, when we will have no choice but to drink them after surgery. Seems there should be another option so you aren't sick of the shakes by the time you have surgery.

How did you do this?

I am on my 2 week pre-op. I am able to have a shake for breakfast, 3-4ozs of protein and 1-2 cups non starchy veggies for lunch and dinner on week one. Week 2 I can have a shake for breakfast and lunch and a dinner as on the 1st week. I'm so sorry you are going through this. I pray that it will get easier

Everyone's diet leading up to surgery is different it depends on your doctor. Mine was like yours... Two shakes and one meal containing 6oz of protein and non starchy veg. But I was also allowed all the sugar free jello and pickles I wanted. Let me tell you that first week I lived off pickles! I had to warn everyone I was seeing that week that I was miserable and I apologized up front! But after that first week it was easy! I actually got to the point that I wasn't even finishing my dinner towards the end of the second week. You CAN do this!! Just stick with the program and find what works for you.

I too can have 1-2 snacks. I love the thought of pickles

Maybe think about like this "doing the same thing and excepting a different result is the definition of insanity."

What you have done in life regarding your eating habits has gotten you here. The chances are, if you keep doing your way failure is on the horizon. Why go through all this pain and hassle? However, this is your choice!

I was on strict liquids only for 2 weeks. No food except pickles. Maybe when you are hungry try a pickle. It was amazing how much it helped. Try to get focused because the last thing you want is to get this close to surgery and it get cancelled because your liver hasn’t shrunk enough. Happened to my best friend and her insurance ended up refusing to pay for the surgery when it was rescheduled for that reason. It’s not worth it. Best of luck to you. We’ve all been there

This would be a good time to practice getting the hang of sipping your way through 64-80ozs of water daily. Getting plenty of water may help keep you feeling fuller. 2 weeks of restriction after perhaps a lifetime of overeating is just a small blip in getting yourself to good health. You can do this! ❤❤

Everyone has a different pre-op and post-op diet. My pre-op was 2 shakes a day plus jello, popsicles. If I got light headed I could eat pickle spears. During post-op I could count all liquids into my 64 oz. As far as the shakes - I made my own - butterfinger, chocolate cake batter, Thin mint cookie, orange creamsicle, lemon pound cake. My go to is ALWAYS chocolate cake batter! Good luck to you!

Thank you! I made it through!
