Hi I too am also new to this site. I had my surgery 17 months ago and things have been tough as well. I too would eat and dry heave for what seamed like forever; sometimes I would vomit, other times I wouldnt. I would have a feeling like I could feel my food moving, I called it worms. After many test, months of being on pain meds to help cope with the pain my Dr. went in and found I had a horrible hernia and where my pouch had been connected a small part of it had seperated almost creating a hole in. While it is fustrating, you are your biggest advocate. Hang in there!!

There are a lot of things that can cause these symptoms so a GI is a good starting point to try to find out what the problem is, so is a C scan and MRI. I had bad pain in my pelvic and stomach areas for a little more than a year before I was correctly diagnosed with a huge hernia of my large bowel. The surgeon who did the repair told me a hernia is one of the most difficult things to diagnose without the proper testing. I was going to have my RNY last year but because of the undiagnosed pain I had to postpone it. I can't even imagine going through the RNY recovery while at the same time having hernia pain or pain of any kind!!! My heart goes out to both of you for having to suffer so much.

Hi Jenn, I am trying to find a specialist who will tailor a surg. for me. You will find my post about being 15 years post op and all the struggles and medical problems I have had. After so many endoscopys and upper GI's they have found that I have develop a lot of scar tissue around the opening of my stomach so that the opening of my stomach is less than the diameter of a straw. This sets me up for a lot of vomitting, cramping, dehydration and bleeding ulcers. I have had sur.to fix this once and now it has happened again. Everytime I develop bleeding ulcers on top of pouch because the food sits there and is very acidic. Also, I found out that certain meds I was taking created a lot of problems. Always check with your gastro dr. to see if the meds other drs. have perscribed for you can block the opening of your stomach or create ulcers. My gastro also gave strict instructions about pain meds such as "DO NOT" take anything other than liquid Tylenol or dissolvable tablets for pain (this really stinks b/c it doesn't always help--need something stronger) I have to say that I do have liquid Vicodin for really rough times. Also, if you are throwing up a lot and get lots of headaches because of dehydration--drink G2's it helps my headaches much better than water. I hope things get better.

I have been having waves of nausea and some vomiting for about 2 months now. I had roux n y in 2004. I have not have great weight loss but have been exercising faithfully for 2 1/2 years. I am 70 years old. I am going to be scheduled for upper GI and ultra sound (hopefully soon). I had a hernia repair last year. Has someone else experienced these symptoms and what was the outcome? My PCP has me taking Nexium for about 4 days now, but I cant see much difference. Usually the nausea starts in the afternoon or evening. I am very concerned as I have never had many post op problems except for occasional dumping syndrome. Please share with me if any of you have dealt with this.
Thanks.

I had RNY 8 months ago....I too suffer from nausea every time I eat or drink anything.. Drs don't know why....my problem/question is how do I work a full time job and deal with the nausea? Does anyone have any ideas/help?

Hi, Had my RNY in 2010, I had one complication in 2012 a bowel obstruction. I have lost 143 pounds and I have 20 more to go before reaching my goal of 175. However, I have experienced nausea at least 3-4 times a week everyday since the surgery, not to mention the occasional stomach cramps...does anyone out there have a cause or a solution, I had to run into a store this morning to buy a fresh supply of peppermints because I felt the hurl sensation coming upon me. I am kind of tired of this part.

I get nauseated if I eat pasta at all or salad but now a little (few pieces ) can be tolerated. I get really hungry but full fast. EAT VERY slowly, Chew 22 times for each mouthful, put fork or spoon down for at least 30 seconds betw mouthfuls. I complained enough that they did a UGI and it showed NORMAL but then a few months later the PA at the surgeons office ordered an esophogoscopy and it showed a large ulcer so am on Prilosec and liquid antacid and will have another next week (4 mos from first). I love salads so this is very hard for me, meat does not want to be there much either as well as chicken so I have trouble with getting in the proteins. FOR ME, it has been worth it, just not focused on eating any longer because it is an ordeal sometimes. I have not vomited for months and months but I do get nauseated if I eat too fast, too much or the wrong foods.

I had chromic nausea prior to my R-N-Y as a result of esophageal issues and severe GI issues (13 ulcers at one time and others popping up here and there).
All of my esophageal issues exacerbated my respiratory issues and lead to numerous cases of aspiration pneumonia.
I have periods of nausea but nothing like before I had my R-N-Y. When I do get nauseous I sit down and sip on some water or broth.
I have also found that sticking to my meal schedule helps as well. I try to have my meals at the same time everyday.
If I am not able to for what ever reasons, I will have a protein shake to cover that meal and this helps me avoid being nauseous.
I learned early on to carry a protein shake pre made box like Premiere Protein Shake in my purse.

I have been recently diagnosed with a gastric fistula...where my stomach has attached itself to my pouch and caused a large whole. My food, what stays down...goes in either my fistula (original stomach) or in my pouch and down my over dialated intestine. Not sure what to do and could really use some advise. There are two things they can do, but one is an endoscopic procedure that my doctor has only had training for but has never performed. I also have ulcers and constant nausia. I am 11 years out post my surgery and had originally lost over 150lbs, but have gained 50lbs back. it seems that the only foods i can keep down the make me feel a little full are pasta and potatoes...but we are not suppose to have them. I have now went back to drinking protein shakes again, at least one a day to see if that helps and more meds. Anybody else diagnosed with a fistula? Please let me know.
