Vitamin deficient

I received a call on Thurday from my surgeon's office to inform me that I am deficient in Vit. A, D as well as iron and magnesium. I am only 4 weeks post-op and had the sleeve so I am absorbing everything I eat. I take my suppliments as instructed. I was told the week before that my parathyroid levels are high so I need to see an endroconologist. My kidney and liver levels are also abnormal. Therefore, I need to see a kidney specialist and have my liver checked every month until further notice. I am overwhlemed. I reviewed my pre-op tests and my iron and magnesium levels were normal. It does appear some kidney functions were abnormal. Anyone experience any vitamin deficiencies after surgery? I had to postpone going back to work as I have numerous doctor appt's and am still not feeling well enough to work. Maybe the above explains why. I don't have hypertension or diabitits which might explain the kidney problems. I guess I have to wait and see. I want my life back. I just have been going from doctor to doctor only to be told I need to go to more. Sorry for the rant.

My thoughts and prayers are with you for a quick resolve to this, How frustraing it must be. Tom

Hi Kim,

I had my surg a day before you did. 1st, your weight loss is good & sounds average or better so be proud of yourself. You've been through a lot in this past month & in the process of all these crazy changes physically, emotionally, psychologically, etc. you managed to lose 22 lbs - pretty darn incredible.

In regards to your original post, I think it may take a bit for our bodies to adjust to the new configuration, so to speak after our surgeries. It's good that your medical team is checking into this and doing tests to perhaps rule things out. If it makes you feel any better, I'd be freaking out, too.

May I suggest asking questions about the correlation of the various tests to functions & how they may be changed as a result of the surgery & what & how it may impact you. Perhaps it will just be a matter of tweaking things to get your body healthy & performing at its best. While definitely scary, it's still better to know than not to know. Fear of the unknown can take you to the darkest of places and you certainly don't need that at this time.

We're still figuring out how things work, effect us & getting into a system of sorts. It's all trial & error & no one size fit or cure. Let's work w/the medical professionals to best understand how things should operate properly & most efficiently & what we can do to help that happen.

It was my understanding that certain supplements would be added around the 1 month point; my 1 month appt is tomorrow. I'm nervous because I don't feel like I'm losing weight this past week though I've really got nothing to base it on. I was weighing myself many times a day & my surg said limit it to once a week - so it's Mondays now. I'll let tomorrow's weigh in be a surprise. I told myself that I need to get over the feer of the scale & take it for what it truly is, just a tool to tell us how much we weigh. I refuse to give it anymore power than that.

I expect that they'll want me to add the B12 microlozeges ($0.88 at Walmart for 30), calcium citrate & iron?

I was experiencing so doggone much itching that I asked at the 2 wk appt if I could resume taking my generic Zyrtec & go the go ahead, it's helped a lot.

I still have my bouts of extreme night sweats & will need to address it again. I believe something may be off w/body heat regulation (?). But this is a tool & I never expect things to go perfectly, I'm not one of those people, so I believe it's entirely possible something may be off but nothing to freak out over yet. They took me off my low dose cholesterol med that I started taking a couple of months ago, too. I believe we get blood labs at 2 months & I have confidence that I may be able to drop it?

Stay as positive & optimistic as you can. Things do seem to go better if we don't go in expecting & predicting the worse. Vitamin defiencies may be par for the course & a matter or adding a supplement?

Please let us know how things go. All of us wish you the best of possible outcomes in all your encounter. Don't beat yourself up by the scale. You may not dump a ton today or this week or month but that doesn't mean it won't catch up next month. Initially they sent you home w/a lot of fluid & gas, too. Each IV bag of fluid adds 2.5 lbs.

Go get 'em! :)

Taking all my supplements and my surgeon insists that I most have been deficient before surgery. My iron and magnesium were normal I checked my blood work. MY gums are bleeding which is new. I do agree with him that it happened quickly after surgery which surprised me to especially since I have been taking the supplements since the 4th day after surgery. I had the sleeve so everything I eat is absorbed. Not that I eat that much, but I do always get my protein in. They will recheck in 3 months. Hopefully by then I will be eating food which might improve things. Thanks for the support and taking the time to respond. Wishing all a peaceful day.
